Education Outreach Mission

The Friends of the River’s education and outreach mission is:

To increase appreciation and stewardship of the Smoky Hill River by connecting with community members through history, recreation, science, and the arts.

Importance of reaching our youth

“In the end we will conserve only what we love;  we will love only what we understand;  and we will understand only what we are taught.”

-Baba Dioum, 1968

The beautiful Smoky Hill River, which once was a vibrant part of Salina, providing economic and recreational opportunities, ceased to flow long before the young people in our community were born. The good news is that the river will flow once again at the end of 2030.

How can we prepare our youth for this wonderful change and ensure that the river will be valued and cared for going forward? Education is the pathway to creating appreciation, and in turn, stewardship. It is our hope to grow leaders with a passion for our community’s river.
